What is Non-Emergency Medical Transportation?
Non-emergency medical transportation is for patients who require special medical attention while in transit from one location to another, and who does not require medical intervention or treatment or rapid transport to an emergency facility. SMR Ambulance Services provides non-emergency medical transportation service, We are a Medicare and LogistiCare (Medicaid) provider.
Who Uses Non-emergency Medical Transportation?
An ideal candidate for non-emergency medical transportation is a person who is medically stable, yet still requires medical support. For example, a resident of a nursing home who has recently been released from the hospital could use our service to return to the nursing home. Or perhaps a chronically ill patient might need medical transportation to get to a specialist in a distant location.

Who qualifies for an Ambulance?
Ambulance is generally for someone who meets the following Criteria:
Unable to get up from bed without assistance, Unable to Ambulate AND unable to sit in a chair or wheelchair.
However People with certain medical conditions may qualify for an Ambulance even if they are able to sit on a wheelchair, for more information please contact 609-949-2700.
What DOES Medicare Cover?
Medicare generally DOES cover:
Transports to and from hospitals if the receiving hospital is the closest facility
The patient will be responsible for additional mileage to any other facility unless it is to receive a medically necessary service not provided at the original facility
Transports to approved dialysis facilities (Prior Authorization is required)
Documented emergency transports
Transports between SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility) and a hospital
What is NOT covered under the Medicare Program?
The Medicare Program does NOT cover:
Transportation in wheelchair vans or cars
Transportation by stretcher to doctor's offices
What DOES the Medicaid cover?
Medicaid Program is managed by LogistiCare and it covers:
Stretcher Transports
From hospital to doctor’s office, nursing home, dialysis, residence, and to another hospital
Wheelchair Transports
Discharges from hospital to home or SNF
From residence to doctor’s office, hospital, wound care and to dialysis
Medicar Transports
Discharges from hospital to home or SNF
From residence to doctor’s office, hospital, wound care and to dialysis
What is LogistiCare?
Logisticare is a contracted medical transportation broker for the state of New Jersey to coordinate transportation for Medicaid recipients.
Trips must be set up 48 business hours in advance unless the appointment being set up is considered an urgent matter.
Logisticare accepts Medicaid pending patients.
Dual eligible patients should be called into office for consultation, 609-949-2700.
How do I Schedule an Appointment for Transport?
If you have Medicaid, you have to contact LogistiCare in order to schedule an appointment regardless of the service level you need.

If you don't have an insurance, you can contact us at 609-949-2700 to get a quote.
How far in advance should a trip be scheduled?
As soon as the individual/ordering facility has complete trip information. We will make every attempt to provide last minute transportation, and usually same day trips can be accommodated. Trips can be scheduled up to a year in advance
